My Story

The Journey to Being an Alcohol Addiction Coach

I've got three grown children and a beautiful grandson, and I'm married to the most patient man on the planet. I'm sharing this to establish that I didn't have a troublesome life. In fact, my 'drinking career' didn't start until my kids were on their own.

I had a great job and was happy most of the time. But there was a void, and for a while, booze filled that emptiness within me. I didn't want to admit it, but my drinking had dramatically changed. I lied to myself as long as possible, as I had gone from an occasional glass of wine to a nightly bottle or two. I was so embarrassed, but I couldn't stop. I tried moderation, but that was a joke. I tried to stop completely, but I couldn't get more than a few days in a row before I was pouring a glass of wine.

Overcoming Alcohol Addiction

I tried to hide it from my family, but I wasn't fooling anyone. I'm not sure when my binge drinking started, but that's when I got scared. I wanted guidance in figuring out what was wrong with me. “Why couldn't I stop?” I knew of no other option than AA, so I started attending meetings.

I went every day for months. The people there were warm and welcoming. They all seemed to understand my situation. "Finally, a group that understands me and will help me get my life back!" I said to myself. But as kind as they were, their methodology didn't feel right.

Yes, I knew there was a serious problem, but I didn't believe I was sick with a disease. The label of 'alcoholic' made me cringe, yet I called myself one every time I spoke at a meeting. Moreover, I didn't particularly like referring to myself as powerless—that just didn't fly.

Life in AA Meetings

Our Founder met some of the kindest and most understanding people imaginable. They shared the same struggles and fears. Despite several weeks of meetings and the white chips they collected every time they started over, our Founder began to question if this method was right for her.

She knew AA had a long history of success. Still, something didn’t quite fit. She didn’t feel broken or ill or powerless. All she felt was this inexplicable pull towards the bottle, this strange change in her thinking that made setting it down seem way bigger than her. She yearned for the days when alcohol was a simple choice, not a demand.
